Schooling at the University of Kerala Medical College to receive a medical degree, came over to the US and earned a medical license, worked in places like St Louis and currently in North Carolina
In practice for over 20 years
What are your day-to-day responsibilities and typical caseload?
See patients for a variety of diseases such as acute illness and chronic care management
Oversee the clinic by maintaining staff and dealing with records
Perform physical work with specialists, interpret labs
What is most exciting about your job?
Making a difference in patients' lives from things as small as reassurance in a stressful time to helping them create a risk management plan: making that tangible impact makes it all the more rewarding
Why did you decide to pursue medicine?
Passion for science and passion to help others came together in a meeting point where I can constantly apply my knowledge to solve real-world problems in patients' lives
What is one moment in your career that made you appreciate medicine?
Diagnosed a patient with an autoimmune disorder, the patient had been suffering for many years and had received no clear diagnosis, seeing relief and gratitude was fulfilling once she received a proper diagnosis and started treatment
If you could go back and choose a different specialty, would you? Why or why not?
Though other specialties offer unique perspectives, I would choose internal medicine again due to the wide scope of people I can help and allows me to develop a long-term relationship with them through comprehensive care
What is the most difficult part of your job?
The long hours and intensive workload especially through medical school and residency
Consisted of sleepless hours in the library, sustaining off caffeine, sacrifice of personal and emotional time
Support of family and friends helped- make sure to have a support system!
How are you able to maintain a work-life balance?
Schedule time for not only my family but myself
Set clear goals and boundaries in each area of my life
Reliable team that can take on some of the workload
Engage in activities that I enjoy and let me relax
Advice to students pursuing medicine?
It can be difficult a lot of the time but remember you don't have to be perfect
Long and challenging journey ahead but remember the reward of helping others is much beyond that
Stay curious and make sure to seek help from mentors if you need it
Cultivate a passion for lifelong learning and let that lead you
